About
Sal Arguello, CPA
Sal Arguello is a Certified Public Accountant based in Kansas City, Missouri.
I believe small business owners deserve more than a once-a-year visit with their accountant. My approach is built on a few simple ideas:
- Year-round, not just tax season. I stay involved throughout the year so we can plan ahead, not scramble in April. Regular check-ins mean fewer surprises and more money kept in your pocket.
- Plain language. You shouldn't need an accounting degree to understand your own numbers. I'll explain what your financials mean and what to do about them, without the jargon.
- Clear, flat pricing. You'll know exactly what you're paying each month and what's included. No hourly billing and no surprise invoices.
- Practical tools. Beyond keeping your books, I build things you can actually use, like job pricing worksheets and overhead calculators, so you can make better decisions day to day.
- Responsive and personal. When you work with me, you work with me. I get back to you quickly, and I take the time to understand your business and your goals.

Answers to the questions small businesses ask.
- Why a business can be profitable and still short of cashProfit and cash are measured differently. Profit counts work when it is done; cash arrives when customers pay. Several things take cash without ever appearing as an expense on the profit and loss statement, including money owed by customers, materials bought ahead of jobs, loan principal, equipment, owner draws and tax payments. A profitable business can be short of cash for all of those reasons at once.
- What a profit and loss statement actually tells youA profit and loss statement shows what the business earned, what it spent, and what was left, over a period of time. Read it top to bottom. Revenue comes first, then the direct costs of delivering the work, which gives gross profit. Then the overheads, which gives net profit. The useful part is not the final number but what changed compared with last month or last year.
- Employee or contractor? Why the difference mattersIt is not your choice and it is not the contract's choice. The IRS looks at the whole working relationship in three areas, behavioural control, financial control, and the type of relationship, and no single factor decides it. If you treat an employee as a contractor without a reasonable basis, you can be held liable for the employment taxes.
